Roverway 2018 officially started after dinner with the Opening ceremony. The Rover Band made their first appearance and played, among others, the Roverway 2018 song “Leave your mark”. They played it several times so everybody could learn it and even get acquainted with the dance. We also heard speeches by Marjolein Sluijters (WAGGGS) and Julijana Daskalov (WOSM) in which they spoke about the Roverway 2018 theme “Opposites attract”. Frans Timmermans gave an inspiring speech about making a difference and he got some challenging questions from participants.

After the official part there was “our own” DJ Jeroen van de Velden who really got the party started. People were dancing and obviously the sand flew all around but it didn’t matter, even though almost everybody had a shower earlier on. There was Spanish music, English music, old and new music, but all songs were meant to make you dance. It seemed like everybody was having a great time and danced until their feet were numb. Some Austrians were actually rowing to the music at some point.

After a long day in the sun and evening full of dancing it was time to get some sleep. Some slept in the tent and some under the stars. There wasn’t too much noise, so those who wanted to sleep could easily do so. And those weren’t all that tired yet could be found at the water edge talking or simply looking for shooting stars.

Opposites Attract

This Roverway edition
will focus on the personal
development of the participating Rovers and Rangers as part of their role in society. The Roverway will provide the environment in which Rovers and Rangers can interchange experiences, knowledge and ideas. This exchange of experiences will be encouraged through the three educational objectives, which all centralize around society and intercultural learning.
